NOUNS
NOUN – a word that names people, places, things or ideas
PROPER NOUN – specific nouns, always capitalized (ex. Mr. Edwards or
Ford)
COMMON NOUN – not specific nouns, not capitalized (ex. teacher or car)
POSSESSIVE NOUN – shows ownership or possession (ex. Mike’s or
people’s)
Remember the difference: its = possessive
It’s = it is (contraction)
ABSTRACT NOUN – a noun that cannot be seen, heard, or touched (ex.
sadness, fear or anger)
CONCRETE NOUN – a noun that can be seen, heard or touched (ex. chalk, book or staples)
Nouns will be used in sentences as: Subjects, objects of prepositions, direct objects, and predicate nouns.
Antecedent: The noun or nouns that are replaced by a pronoun.
Gerund: A verb ending in “ing” used as a noun. ex. Running is great exercise. My favorite sport is fishing. Being in shape is evidence of exercising.
