A Christmas Carol
Background Information
Charles Dickens 1812 - 1870 (one of the most famous authors ever
, Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Great Expectations)
-He wrote this for the common man, so that everyone could read and enjoy this story
-Written in 1843 (175 years ago - written in six weeks!)
-Genre - classic, social commentary (ghost story)
-Written in  five staves (the different parts of a carol)- Chapters
-Starts off in 1st person then switches to 3rd person for the rest of the book.
-Setting is Victorian England, London (Under the leadership of Queen Victoria 1837-1901)
-London was a difficult place to live at this time.
There were dirty living conditions, a lot of orphans, no refrigeration and little meats and proteins,
children were working (almost servants)
The world was changing to the “Industrial Revolution” -long 12 hour work days working in coal mines or mills.
Horrible time for kids to live.
-Genre- is “Social Commentary” and a classic tale of “redemption.” (theme)?
-There are references all over current media - countless adaptations of the story.
