SENTENCE – a group of words that express a complete thought
A sentence is made up of two parts – the SUBJECT and PREDICATE
SUBJECT – noun or pronoun that does the action
PREDICATE – verb, action, linking or being – what is being done
A predicate may be one or two or more verbs.
ex. She has been studying all morning.
COMPOUND SUBJECT – more than one noun (linked by a conjunction such as and or but) Brian and Gale competed for first string positions.
COMPOUND PREDICATE – more than one thing being done (linked by a conjunction such as and or but)
ex - I searched and finally found my phone.
VERB PHRASE – a helping verb + the main verb with the same
subject (ex. have been reading)
You will NEVER find a subject or predicate in a prepositional phrase.
SENTENCE PURPOSE – there are 4 types of sentences
1. DECLARATIVE – a statement (ex. Today is Thursday.)
2. INTERROGATIVE – a question (ex. What is your name?)
3. IMPERATIVE – a command with an understood subject of “you” (ex. Look over there.)
4. EXCLAMATORY – a statement that expresses emotion or strong feeling. (ex. I won!)
