PRONOUN – a word that replaces or takes the place of a noun. It stands for a person, place or thing.
Ex. – Brian just got paid. He is going to the mall.
ANTECEDENT - The noun that the pronoun replaces
Ex. – Mike is going to the mall, he is going with his brother.
8 TYPES OF PRONOUNS
1. PERSONAL PRONOUNS – Take the place of a person or a group of people (Ex: I, me, we, us, they, them, her, he, she)
2. POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS – Show ownership (Ex: my, mine, ours, your, his, hers, its, their)
3. INTERROGATIVE PRONOUNS – Question pronouns (Ex: who, whom, what, which, whose)
4. REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS – End in self, or selves and reflect the subject of the sentence (Ex: myself, herself, himself, themselves)
5. DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS – Be careful using this type of pronoun in your writing – they often start “talking sentences” which you should avoid. (Ex: this, that, these, those)
6. INDEFINITE PRONOUN - Do not refer to a specific antecedent (Ex. anyone, everyone, someone, nobody.)
7. COMPOUND PRONOUN - takes a plural verb -
8. RELATIVE PRONOUN- Used to introduce adjective clauses. Ex - who, whose which and that - - ex. I am a teacher, which means I love kids….or, I signed up for a class, that started yesterday. I love Elmo, who is a red monster.
