Open response answers will be scored according to the following:
- Topic sentence that restates and answers the question
- Examples that completely and effectively provide strong evidence that supports your topic sentence
- Strong vocabulary, and quote use from the text
- A conclusion that restates/re-answers the prompt
- Conventions: spelling, capitalization, punctuation, transitions and indenting
- Garvey and Edwin refuse to give up on Cole. What motivates them to “put their necks out” in support of Cole. Use evidence from the novel to explain your reasons.
- How has the tone of the novel changed since the first chapters? Use specific evidence from both parts of the novel to support your answer.
- Write a realistic dialogue between Cole and his father after his return from a year on the island. Be sure to explain setting and use facts from the novel as evidence.
- Create a narrative advertisement for Circle Justice. In your advertisement, be sure to explain all the benefits and alternatives Circle Justice provides.
- Banishment to “The Island” is a dangerous and challenging task. Write a step by step “how to” article to explain the safest ways to survive a year alone on an Alaskan island.
